Our family serving yours for four generations.
In 1918, when Elfego Salazar began serving Albuquerque families with his son, Frank A. Salazar, they established a tradition for generations to come. Now, four generations later, the Salazar name is synonymous with care and dignity in the funeral service industry.
The First Building. The original funeral home was located downstairs in a building at 315 South Third Street, which was the first YWCA in Albuquerque. In helping people deal with the loss of their loved one, Elfego offered his skills as a carpenter building caskets. Elfego’s son, Frank was in the funeral business with his father-in-law at a time when funeral directors were known as undertakers. Frank pursued his advanced training from Worsham Training School for Embalming and graduated in June 1921.
1946 – A New Building is Constructed. After World War II, Frank was joined by his two sons, Paul J. Salazar and Lester E. Salazar, who were veterans. The Salazar family had established their funeral business, and a new facility was needed. In 1946, Frank and his two sons completed construction on the main building including the Floral Chapel. The architecture was designed in the art-deco style which was popular in the 1940’s. Paul and Lester pursued advanced schooling from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. Paul graduated in June 1947 and Lester graduated a year later. Lester had been licensed as a funeral director in the state of New Mexico since 1948.
Serving for Four Generations. In 1974, Lester’s son Lawrence E. Salazar joined Paul and Lester in the family business. Paul retired from the business in 1979. Lester passed away in 2006 and Lawrence continues to run the business carrying out the family tradition. We are proud of the exceptional quality of our service and embalming which has been passed on through the generations. When Elfego and his son, Frank began serving families in 1918, they had a vision that Salazar & Sons Mortuary would provide compassionate, knowledgeable, practical and superior service with respect and sincerity. Today, four generations later, we stand by that vision.
